BREAKING NEWS: The EU is pregnant with an elephant… 😉 🤭
Author: Charlaine Baartjes
Translation? The EU just announced that textile producers have 20 months (that is the same gestation period as an elephant, between 18-22 months) to figure out how to implement the NO textile waste obligations.
So, between mom and dad elephant, the following needs to be planned.
1. Who is going to pay for school fees (Producers need to pay for collection, sorting, and recycling)
2. Which disciplining system will be followed? (By April 2028, every EU member state needs an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme for textiles in place
3. What work is little Elly Elephant going to do? (Producers will be rewarded for longer-lasting products or better recycled products)
So what is the elephant in the wardrobe?
We’re still making too much stuff. Nudge-nudge… time to re-think the business model.
Here’s the good news: 20 months = 20 chances to reframe.
Not just compliance… but creativity.
Not just cost… but circular value.
Not just waste… but wasted opportunities turned into wins.
This is where I help: guiding businesses to design out waste, rethink supply chains, and turn “eco-modulation” (fancy word, I know) into an actual competitive advantage.
Because wouldn’t you rather invest in better products than in landfill fees?
I am curious: If YOU had 20 months to reinvent textiles, what’s the one bold idea you’d try first?
