If the Circular Economy were an Ecosystem… 🌍
Author: Charlaine Baartjes

Close your eyes. 😊 (ok, you need to open them to read)
Imagine walking through a thriving forest. You’ll notice something magical:
No alternative text description for this image
1️⃣ Nothing is wasted.
2️⃣ Every output is an input.
3️⃣ Energy flows efficiently.
4️⃣ Life adapts, regenerates, and flourishes in cycles.
5️⃣ Abundance is everywhere
That’s the real circular economy. Not a diagram on page 4 of a strategy document. In essence, all materials are either grown or mined and originate from nature.

Circular economy is NOT:
❌ a “100% recyclable” sticker slapped on a plastic bottle.

It is an interconnected system where:
🕸️ Designers are like pollinators 🦋 bringing ideas and solutions from one part of the system to another.
🕸️ Producers are like the big trees 🌳 anchoring the system, providing resources responsibly, and sheltering smaller species (suppliers, innovators).
🕸️ Repairers and refurbishers are like the decomposers 🐜 turning “waste” into valuable nutrients available for the next cycle.
🕸️ Policy-makers are the apex predators 🐺 keeping the balance, so no one species (or company) depletes the system.
🕸️ Data is like water 💧 found everywhere in the system, feeding decision-making, revealing hidden droughts or floods.

In nature, balance isn’t a “nice-to-have”, it’s survival.

What if, in business, it’s the same?

The circular economy works when every actor plays their role and understands their interdependence.

Our challenge to you this week:
If your business were part of a natural ecosystem, what species would you be… and would the ecosystem survive without you?
